Parts of The Human Brain
The Four Lobes
Frontal Lobe
At the front of the brain
The part lying just behind the forehead is the prefrontal cortex
The Executive Control Centre
These lobes deal with planning and thinking
Self-will area
Reasoning and Judgment
Temporal Lobe
Above the ears
Speech centre is only on the left side
These deal with sounds and music
Face and object recognition
Damage to this area could result in: speech difficulty, memory acquisition, long and short term memory loss
Parietal Lobe
Near the top of the brain
spatial orientation, calculation, facial recognition
Co-coordinating different senses, attention and awareness
Occipital Lobe
At the back of the skull
used almost exclusively for visual processing (anything to do with the eyes)
Damage to this area may result in: hallucinations, inability to see colour
Motor Cortex
Housed between the frontal lobe and parietal lobe (closet to the front)
Controls body movement
Somatosensory Cortex
Behind the motor cortex
Processes touch signals from various parts of the body

The Brain Stem
Located at the base of the skull
Controls things like heartbeat, respiration, body temperature
Also houses the RAS (reticular activating system
Responsible for the brain's alertness
The Thalamus
All incoming sensory information (SI) (except smell) goes through here
From here, the SI is sent to other parts of the brain for further processing
It is involved in many cognitive activities as well as memory

The Limbic System
Housed above the brain stem
The Hypothalamus
Nestled just below the thalamus
Monitors the internal signals
Controls the release of hormones
The Hippocampus
Located near the bottom of the limbic system
Consolidates learning as well as transferring memories from working memory to long-term memory
The Amygdala
Attached to the end of hippocampus
Controls emotions, especially fear
Pituitary
Helps regulate hormones

Cerebrum
Thinking, memory, speech, muscular movement
Cerebellum
Coordinates movement
