Types of memory

  1. Memory has different types

    • There are two major categories
      • Short-term memory
        • It is related to the "operational" memory, the short-term memory is the very short time
          • In which it is taken into account
            • Something before discarding it or transferring it to long-term memory.
        • It's closely related to the "working memory", it is like a receptionist for the brain.
          • Work memory vs. short-term memory
            • Operative memory emphasizes the brain's manipulation of the information it receives (using it, storing it, etc.), while short-term memory is a more passive concept.
              • Working memory is often considered the "notebook" of the brain that keeps the information (a number, name, or something else) at hand long enough to use it.
          • Age and short-term memory
            • Age and other clinical conditions make us more likely to have problems performing certain tasks, such as remembering which button to press on a bank's phone menu.
      • Long-term memory
        • It is our brain's system for storing, managing and retrieving information.
          • It's anything you remember that happened more than a few minutes ago.
          • Long-term memories can last only a few days or for many years.
          • Long-term memory is not static either.
          • There are many different forms of long-term memories
            • Explicit memory
              • Things that you remember consciously, as an event in your life or a particular event.
            • Implicit memory
              • Things you do without thinking, like riding a bicycle, that is, unconsciously
                • For example, once you learned how and remembered how to do it
