Project manager
- This is a graphical user interface such as the 'project explorer' window above. A single project can consist of many folders and dozens of files. This tool let you navigate through your project.
Code editor
- This is where the source code is written. A good code editor comes with extra features such as code completion, line numbering, keyword colouring and so on. All, to make it a bit quicker and easier to write code.
Run-time environment
- Emulates a CPU within the IDE. This lets you run code without having to compile it and feed it through the actual CPU, thus saving a lot of time. It is the 'Output Console' shown above.
Debugger
- This tool is used to test the code for errors. It runs within the run time environment. Features of a good debugger include being able to single-step through the code whilst seeing variable values as you do so. You can see above in the console that the debugger was started.
Translator
- This is either a built-in compiler or a built-in interpreter depending on the language. The one above has a python interpreter installed to run the source code. The compiler IDE will create the final executable code and also be used within the run-time environment to execute the source code.
