1. Complier

   • Translates source code into a machine code program to be executed by the processor
   • Advantages
     • Translation is done once only and as a separate process
     • The program that is run is already in machine code so can be executed more quickly
     • Protects the software from competitors who would otherwise be able to see the source code
   • Disadvantages
     • If it encounters errors, it carries on compiling the program and reports errors at the end
     • You cannot change the program without going back to the original source code
