   • - Science and technology based on disciplines (computer science, biology, psychology, linguistics, mathematics, and engineering) - Major trust: development of computer functions (reasoning, learning, and problem solving)

   • - ES: knowledge-based system that employs knowledge Uses an inferencing (reason) procedure to solve problems - Power ES: stems from the specific knowledge about a narrow domain stored - Important to stress: assistants to decision makers& not substitutes for them Knowledge base of an ES containsheuristic knowledge (rules of thumb)
