Atoms, Isotopes and Ions
Radioactive Decay
- Spontaneous decay of an unstable nucleus to a stable nucleus by emitting radioactive rays
- There are three types of radioactive decay. Each type emits a particle from the nucleus
- Alpa Decay
- A particle with two neutrons and protons is ejected from the nucleus of a radioactive particle. The atom is identical to the nucleus of a helium atom
- Only occurs in heavy objects such as uranium, thorium and radium. Furthermore, the common thing about all these atoms is that they all have more neutrons in their nucleus than protons thus making the emission of alpha particles possible
- Beta Decay
- Gamma Decay
- Alpa Decay
