Five major function for an I/O module

1. Control and timing

   • Coordinate the flow of traffic
     • Cooperation with bus arbitrations

2. Processor communication

   • I/O module must communicate with the processor and with the external device.
     • Command decoding , data, status reporting, address recognition

3. Devices communication

   • The I/O module must be able to perform device communication. Command, status information and data

4. Data buffering

   • Balance device and memory speed
     • I/O module buffers data so that peripheral can send/receive at its rate, and CPU can send/receive at its rate

5. Error deduction

   • Reports transmission error
     • Type of error : -Mechanical/ electrical malfunction. - Data error during transmission
