Working Memory Model Evaluation

  1. Strengths: Supporting research- neurological research (brain scans) E.g Bunge- he found that when participants were undergoing tasks that would stimulate their central executive, their pre-frontal lobes were activated. This supports the understanding that the components are separate in the brain.

  2. Strengths: Interactive, not linear. Better at explaining short term memory than the multi-store model.

  3. Weakness: This can't explain why we are able to listen to classical music, which takes use of the phonological loop, and also complete phonological tasks as well without disturbance. According to this model these two things would competing for the same attention of the phonological loop and so they shouldn't happen and yet they still can work together.

  4. Weakness: the episodic buffer is not completely understood how it functions. This is because it can't be falsified. This is also the case for the central executive, it is not fully understood.

  5. Weakness: Lieberman criticizes the model because it links visual and spatial together, but he puts forward the argument that blind people have no visual information and yet have very good spatial awareness.
