Responsive breathing

  1. First identify yourself and ask the athlete permission to help

    • Ensure that the athlete is fully responsive and breathing normally
      • without making gasping, noisy, snorting, or gurgling sounds.
      • The athlete should be able to talk and keep the airway open and clear
      • Move the athlete only if the athlete is in an area that may cause further harm
        • the athlete is at risk for breathing in fluid, vomit or blood; or you must leave the athlete alone to get help. If any of these are true, and you may need to move the athlete
        • Look for and control any severe bleeding with direct pressure.
          • Look for normal tissue color and body temperature.
            • If the skin is bluish or ashen or if it feels cool, this may indicate the athlete has had reduced circulation for at least a few minutes.
            • While waiting for medical assistance, continue to monitor the athletes alertness and make sure he or she continues breathing normally
              • Continue to control bleeding, monitor tissue color and temperature, ad help maintain the athletes normal body temperature.
