1. Hardware

   • router
     • Central point in a local area network. Most will have wifi and ethernet connections
   • switch
     • Extends wifi connection
   • Ethernet cable
     • connects devices to a router ,switch or another computer
   • Network inter face card
     • anything connected to a LAN or WAN must have one. Connects device to a router or switch wiresly

2. Network types

   • LAN
     • Devices which are connected together over a small geographical area
   • WAN
     • Networks which are connected together over a large geographical area
   • WPAN
     • Stands for wireless personal area network. Devices connected to peripheral. e.g bluetooth

4. Security

   • Fire wall
     • Blocks unsolicited incoming network traffic. Controls which programs can send and recive data. Only trusted packets can send data
   • anti malware
     • Scans your computer periodically of malware. It prevents malware from spreading on to other files. Needs updating from time to time.
   • Password
     • Should be at least 8 characters long with a mixture of numbers,letters and symbols. Stops unauthorised users from logining into your accounts
   • Encryption
     • Scrambles data packets using a cipher so unauthorised users can't read it. You need a key to be able to read it

   • Ethernet cable
     • Faster to transfer data compare to WiFi. Has a range of 100meters
       • Cables are more expensive then using WiFi connection
