   • The brave, noble general whose children, according to the witches’ prophecy, will inherit the Scottish throne.

3. first to suspect Macbeth for Duncan's murder

4. he represents the path Macbeth chose not to take: a path in which ambition need not lead to betrayal and murder.

5. banquo's ghost haunts macbeths, out of all the people he has killed
