Yellow fat - inactive, most abundant, has a wide distribution (white at birth, yellow with age as it begins to oxidize)
Brown fat- very active, found only in specific areas of the body, axillae, neck, & near kidneys
closely packed adipocytes, nucleus pushed to side by large fat droplet
