  1. Input Device Functions

    • Touch screen
      • Input and Output
      • Used widely on mobile phones, tablet PC's and interactive whiteboards. Used as an input device by tapping the screen or using gesture control. Used as an output device by viewing the display.
    • Keyboards
      • Commonly used data method - the user presses a key and a code is entered into the computer. Speciality keyboards are used in restautants where each menu is pressed to take an order.
    • Pointing Device/Mouse
      • A mouse is the most popular pointing and selection device used in computing; touch pads and trackballs are also types of pointing devices that are used on laptop/netbook computers.
    • Micrphone
      • Microphones used to input sound into a computer system, often used in videoconference and voice recognition software.
    • Barcode scanner
      • Barcode readers are used to input data automatically from barcodes. the barcode reader scans the barcode using a visible red light, which is then used to identify the details of a product.
    • Joystick/ games controller
      • Joystick is used to play computer games by controlling the way that something moves on the screen; itcan also be used to control devices such as a wheelchair.
    • Webcam
      • Digital image captured and input into system for use in on-screen display or videoconferencing.
    • Sensors
      • Sensors are used to detect physical variables for input into a computer control system such as temperature, pressure and light.
  2. Output Device Functions

    • Flat-screen monitor
      • Flat screen monitors are used to display the output from a computer system. They take up less space and emit less heat than the CRT screens they have replaced.
    • Speakers
      • Use internal sound card to create high quality audio to be output through externally connected speakers.
    • Inkjet printer
      • Colour inkjet printers are smaller than leser printers and produce a higher quality output. Normally used in the home environment, so speed and noise of operation is not such a problem.
    • Laser printer
      • Laser printers are used at home and in business. They operate quietly and print a large number of high quality sheets very quickly. They operate in a similsr way to photocopiers where toner is fused on to paper by heat and pressure.
    • LED lights
      • LED lights are often used as output indicators from a control system.
    • Actuator
      • Actuators are widely used as outputs from a control system; for example it contains a motor and linkage to lift a car park barrier
  3. Speciality devices

    • Many assistive technology devices are available to provide access for disabled users. Input devices include "eye-tracking controllers" foot-operated mouse sip-and-puff switches. Braille printers are used as an outout for the blind or partially sighted user.
