First Conditional
USE
- possible plans, promises, warnings, threats or for persuading someone.
- to talk about actions/events in the future which are likely to happen or have a real possibility of happening.
STRUCTURE
- If + Present verb, future verb
- If I go to Paris next month for work, I'll visit the Eiffel Tower (Plans)
- Future Verb + If + Present Simple
- I will be annoyed if they don't arrive on time.
- If + Simple Present, Will / Won't
- If you touch that wire, you will get an electric shock. (Warning)
- If + Present verb, future verb
MODALS VERBS
- However you can also use the modal verbs MAY, MIGHT and COULD when something is a possible consequence (and not a certain one) in the future.
- If you are nice to me, I may buy you a gift when I'm in Peru.
CONDITION
- First vs Zero Conditional
- The first conditional describes a particular situation, whereas the zero conditional describes what happens in general.
- Example
- (first conditional): If she studies harder, she'll pass the exam (I think it's possible she will study harder and so she'll pass)
- Example
- The first conditional describes a particular situation, whereas the zero conditional describes what happens in general.
- First vs Second Conditional
- The first conditional describes things that I think are likely to happen in the future, whereas the second conditional talks about things that I don't think will really happen. It's subjective; it depends on my point of view.
- Examples
- (zero conditional): if you sit in the sun, you get burned(here I'm talking about every time a person sits in the sun - the burning is a natural consequence of the sitting)
- (first conditional): if you sit in the sun, you'll get burned (here I'm talking about what will happen today, another day might be different)
- (second conditional): If she studied harder, she would pass the exam (I think that she won't study harder, or it's very unlikely, and so she won't pass)
- Examples
- The first conditional describes things that I think are likely to happen in the future, whereas the second conditional talks about things that I don't think will really happen. It's subjective; it depends on my point of view.
