1. Sensory Register

   • Modality-specific: information is held in the same way it is registered
     • A taste is held as a taste
     • A visual image is held as a picture
   • Large but only lasts for half a second
     • Information is lost quickly
     • Sperling 1960- sensory register holds at least nine items but only for a short period of time.
   • It's largely unconscious so has to be deduced from experiments
   • Information not forgotten moved to short-term memory

   • Miller 1956- 'The Magical Number Seven' 7 +/- 2 items can be held
