Composites and New Materials
These are materials that are made from two for more materials bonded together.
This can make materials have more useful properties than either material alone.
Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) is a popular choice for large structural items such as some car bodies and boats.
- It is made from glass fibres bonded with polyester resin.
- This makes is light and can be moulded, but the glass fibres make it stronger.
- Glass fibre is available as woven fabric, matting and loose strands.
- It is made from glass fibres bonded with polyester resin.
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic
- Similar to GRP, but instead of glass fibres, carbon fibres are used.
- Carbon fibre reinforced plastic is even lighter, stronger and tougher than GRP.
- Products made from carbon-fibre composites include protective helmets, racing cars and bulletproof vests
Nanomaterials
- Nanoparticles of a material often have different properties from 'normal' material - that why they can be very useful.
- Self-cleaning glass for windows - the glass has a coating of nanoparticles that cause dirt to break down so it can be easily washed off by rainwater.
- Anti-bacterial coatings, e.g. for toys - surfaces can be coated with a nanomaterial which contains nanoparticles that kill bacteria.
