Human Computer Interface

1. Operating Systems

   • Used to control hardware directly and run applications
   • Functions
     • Manage and control devices, Provide a user interface, Deal with errors, Provide interface between application software and hardware

2. Types of User Interface

   • Graphical user interface (GUI), COmmand line, Voice driven, menu/ dialouge boxes, Touch sensitive, Biometric

3. GUI- have WIMP features; WINDOWS, ICONS, MENUS, POINTERS

   • Advantages- No specialist language needed, use of icons allows user to get program they want
   • DIsadvantages- More memory needed, requirements needed to run GUI

4. Voice Driven-

   • Issue COmmands to software and operating system, Enter data into application software

5. Touch Sensitive

   • Many devices use this e.g. MP3 Player, Mobile Phones, POS (Point of Sale systems)

6. Biometrics

   • Instead of the use of passwords, finger prints gain the access

7. Command Line

   • Advantages- Quicker than going through all different windows
   • Disadvantages- difficult for beginners, all instructions have to be remembered
