Virtual Machines
Computers with CPU, Memory and storage stored as a bit of code on a physical server.
They can be set up on a desktop PC, on a server or in the cloud.
They can be used to help distribute the workload of a physical server. In the picture above, one physical server could have the capability of 4 servers with the help of three virtual machines as well.
Uses:
- Virus use. According to Microsoft Azure VM's can: " safely study computer viruses, isolating the viruses to avoid risking their host computer."
- They can be used to run beta versions of software, to emulate how the program will run on a physical device, without the risk of crashing a physical device if there are bugs or errors in the code.
- Extremely beneficial for software development, as these environments can be created really easily and reduces the amount of physical servers in an area, which has good environmental benefits too.
Examples
- JavaScript engine: interprets and executes JavaScript code, which with the help of a web layout engine can be loaded as a proper website.
