Von Nuemann Architecture

1. Register

   • program counter
     • Stores address of next instruction to be run
   • Accumulator
     • Stores instruction currently being executed
   • Current instruction register
     • Stores instruction currently being executed
   • Memory address register (MAR)
     • Stores memory address where data or instruction will be fetched/written
   • Memory date register (MDR)
     • Stores data or instruction which is being fetched/written from/to memory.

2. Arithmetic logic unit

   • Performs all the calculations for the CPU
     • Example: simple addition and subtraction, binary shifts and logic operations (AND/OR/NOT)

3. Control unit

   • Controls flow of data between CPU and other parts of the computer System
     • Example: Sends control signals to memory, ALU and input/output devices.
