  2. Zero conditional (type 0)

    • The zero conditional (zero conditional) is used to form sentences where both the condition and the result are real events. The best example of this type of sentence are those related to scientific arguments.
    • Grammatical structure
      • Option 1: If + Condition (sentence with conjugated verb in present simple) + Result (sentence with conjugated verb in present simple) Option 2: Result (sentence with verb conjugated in present simple) + if + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in present simple).

          • An ice cube melts if you put in the sun.
  3. First conditional (type 1)

    • The first conditional (first conditional) is used to raise scenarios in the future whose realization is very likely. Therefore, it is the conditional indicated to express plans.
      • You can also form this conditional using other modal verbs instead of will, such as may, should, can.
    • Grammatical structure
      • Option 1: If + Condition (sentence with conjugated verb in present simple) + will + Result (sentence with infinitive verb). Option 2: Result (sentence with verb in infinitive) + will + if + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in present simple).
        • Example
          • If everyone agrees, we will go to Spain next year.
          • We may rent it if we like the apartment.
  4. Second conditional (type 2)

    • The second conditional already enters the realm of hypothetical imaginary scenarios. It is used to raise unrealistic ideas of the present or actions in the future that are unlikely.
    • Grammatical structure
      • Option 1: If + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in past simple) + would + Result (sentence with verb in infinitive). Option 2: Result (sentence with verb in infinitive) + would + if + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in past simple).
        • Example
          • If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
          • You would speak Japanese if you lived in Japan.
  5. Third conditional (type 3)

    • The third conditional (or third conditional) raises situations from the past that did not happen. It is the type of sentence most related to the would of the Spanish subjunctive.
    • Grammatical structure
      • Option 1: If + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in the past perfect) + would have + Result (sentence with verb conjugated in the past). Option 2: Result (sentence with verb conjugated in the past) + would have + if + Condition (sentence with verb conjugated in the past perfect).
        • Example
          • If I had studied medicine, I would have been a surgeon today
          • I would not have been happy today if I had not studied music.
