Where are your photos stored on your phone? What happens when we install a new game on a console? How about if we download a file on a laptop? Where do all these files go? All Computer Systems need secondary storage. Secondary storage is the permanent storage of operating systems, applications and files. Without secondary storage all of our data would be lost when we turn our device off! Imagine having to reinstall every app each time your phone runs out of battery! Nightmare
There are three storage types and they are used in different situations.
- solid state
- Is more durable and has a faster read/write speed than magnetic
- Has a lower capacity and is less cost effective than magnetic

- optical
- effective and portable
- Has a limited capacity and is not very durable
- effective and portable
- solid state
The main ways we can look at storage characteristics are: Capacity - The amount of data the storage can hold Durability - How hard wearing the storage device is Portability - How easily the storage device can be used in other devices (not how easy it is to carry around) Read/write speed - How quickly the storage device can read (load) or write (save) data to another device Cost effective - Good value for money
Has a higher capacity and is more cost effective than solid state
