States of Matter

1. Molecules

   • Solids
     • Solids: The molecules are in a fixed position. Each molecule has enough energy to vibrate, but not enough to leave it's place.
   • Liquids
     • The molecules have enough energy to slide and roll over and around each other. They are not fixed in position, but they cannot break away from each other
   • Gasses
     • The molecules have enough energy to separate completely from each other and move off in all directions

2. States

   • Solid
     • Definite Mass Definite Shape Definite Volume Incompressible Does not flow
   • Liquid
     • Definite Mass No Definite Shape Definite Volume Incompressible Flows
   • Gas
     • Definite Mass No Definite Shape No Definite Volume Easily Compressed Diffuses into available

3. Change of state

   • The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which both the solid and liquid states of a substance exist together
   • The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which evaporation begins to occur throughout the liquid
