OPERATING SYSTEMS (OS)

  1. How it works?

    • Establishes the data structures that will hold the myriad signals, flags and semaphones that are used to communicate within and between the subsystems and applications of the computer
  2. What is a OS?

    • System software that manages computer's hardware and software and provides common services for computer programs
  3. Types of OS

    • Single- and multi-tasking
      • Single-tasking can only run one program at time, multi-tasking allows more than one.
    • Single- and multi-user
      • Single-user haven't facilities to distinguish users. Multi-user have facilities that indentify processes and resources, such as disk space, belonging to multiple users.
    • Distributed
      • Manages a group of distinct computers and makes them appear to be a single computer
    • Templated
      • Refers to creating a single virtual machine image as a guest OS, then using itas a tool for multiple running virtual machines
    • Embedded
      • Are designed to operate on small mchines. The are able o operate with a limited number of resources.
    • Real-time
      • Guarantees to process events or data within a certain short amount of time.
    • Library
      • Is one in wich the servics that a typical OS provides, such as networking are provideed in the form of libraries. These libraries are composed with the application and configuration code to construct unikernels
  4. Functions

    • Manages the hardware and software resources of the system (like the processor, memory, disk space...)
    • Provides a stable, consistent way for applications to deal with the ahardware.
  5. OS development

    • Further, a process called NetBooting has streamlined the capacity to move the working OS of a standard consumer desktop computer off of the machine it controls. NetBooting allows OS for one computer to be served over a network connection, by a remote computer connected anywhere in the network.
