Primary Storage

RAM
1. Purpose
  1. Short term memory
    1. Main place for storing instructions and data whilst a program is being executed.
  2. Part of Fetch, Decode, Execute cycle
  3. RAM is much faster than a HDD or SSD
2. Volatile
3. Can be overwritten
ROM
1. Purpose
  1. Gives computer instructions on how to start up
  2. Loads operating system into RAM
  3. Access built in hardware such as the HDD
2. Non Volatile
  1. Does not lose information when power is turned off
3. Firmware
  1. Cannot be overwritten
Differences
Cache
1. Purpose
  1. Used to temporarily hold data and instructions that the processor is likely to reuse.
2. high-speed random access memory (RAM) which is built into the CPU
  1. Faster than RAM because it is in the CPU
Virtual Memory
1. Purpose
  1. When RAM is full, small area of secondary storage used as RAM to help
