1. Firewall

   • Can control which apps can send or receive data
   • Needed to stop intruders form accessing your computer

2. Encryption

   • Disguises contents of files so they can only be understood by authorised users
   • Software uses complex algorithm
   • Only authorised users can descramble content.

3. Defragmentation

   • Stored not as a whole file, but as a series of segments
   • Sometimes the segments run together in sequence and sometimes the segments are split up over a disk

4. Data compression

   • Reduces the size of a file stored on secondary storage
   • Smaller files are easier to transmit
   • Reduced size means more files can be stored in any given area of storage

5. Backups

   • Backups can contain a copy of all files on a computer
   • To prevent any data deleted forever or stolen from hackers
   • Backups are usually sent to a high capacity secondary storage device or to the cloud
