Intelligence Models - Gabriel Krausse
Triarchic Theory
- Analytical intelligence is the ability to solve problems and puzzles by either analyzing or evaluating the problem at hand (Rice University, n.d.).
- Practical intelligence is the ability to utilize one's intelligence to deal with everyday tasks by either adapting or shaping themselves to fit within the new environments (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
- People high in this intelligence learn better by doing things and being actively involved in an activity rather than watching or reading on how to do something, which, in turn, gives them the insight to plan, regulate, and assess their learning capabilities (Joseph, 2010).
- As someone who considers themselves very adaptable, I would say I scored myself high in this intelligence due to learning fast when I do things with my hands instead of just watching someone do it. Additionally, this can be seen due to being within different professions throughout my life, such as landscaping, pest control, and catering, with no previous experience, and becoming proficient in them.
- Creative Intelligence is the ability to think and deal with new and unusual situations by gaining insight from existing knowledge and skills to solve novel problems (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
General Intelligence
- Proposes that there is only one intelligence, which contributes to the performance of all cognitive domains of an individual, such as writing and math (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
Emotional Intelligence
- The ability to understand emotions in yourself as well as others, to communicate effectively, empathize with others, regulate your moods, resist impulses and other behaviors are all aspects of emotional intelligence (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
Multiple Intelligence
- Multiple intelligence theory states that an IQ test does not define an individual's intellectual ability, but rather, there are eight different modalities of intelligence proficiency that vary for each individual, which means that what they lack in one area, they may be proficient in another (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019)
- Interpersonal
- The ability to understand, interact, and empathize with others through verbal and non-verbal communication by discerning and responding to the moods, temperaments, motivations, and desires of others (Ramdane, 2020).
- As someone who enjoys spending time with friends and being social, I feel like I have grasped an understanding of people fairly well. For instance, I can read people's moods and have an idea of what that person is thinking before they tell me. I have no issues with reaching out to strangers and being able to communicate as if we already knew each other. Because of this, I have taken on roles such as treasurer for my club and have even tutored other students last semester. Thus, I’d score myself a medium for this intelligence.
- People high in this intelligence often learn by interacting and communicating with others in group projects, class discussions and debates, tutorings, and clubs, which tend to lead to careers such as politicians, teachers, actors, and social workers (OpenLearn, 2020).
- The ability to understand, interact, and empathize with others through verbal and non-verbal communication by discerning and responding to the moods, temperaments, motivations, and desires of others (Ramdane, 2020).
- Spatial Intelligence
- The ability to generate, retain, and transform the real world by accurately visualizing it in the spatial world through mental manipulation (Morgan, 1996).
- As someone who is constantly daydreaming, I have acquired the skills necessary to create images in my mind in full detail, such as textures, colors, and smells. I can rotate any physical object in my mind at a full 360º degree angle with no problem. For instance, I can picture an entire layout of my hometown as if it were a 3D model and can even view myself from a third-person perspective. Thus, I’d score myself high for this intelligence.
- People high in this intelligence often learn better by engaging their visual senses in various ways such as writing notes, looking at diagrams or charts, and reading books, which tends to lead towards careers such as sailors, pilots, sculptors, painters, and many more, that rely heavily on visual prowesses (OpenLearn, 2020).
- The ability to generate, retain, and transform the real world by accurately visualizing it in the spatial world through mental manipulation (Morgan, 1996).
- Musical
- The capacity to recognize, perform, and appreciate music, rhythm, and all other aspects of musical patterns from different instruments and compositions (Ramdane, 2020).
- People high in this intelligence learn better when their instructors teach orally, when they read information out loud, and listen to podcasts or music while they do their work alone, which leads to careers such as composers, conductors, musicians, vocalists, etc. (OpenLearn, 2020).
- Music is a big factor in my day-to-day life. From waking up to doing assignments, showering, and going to sleep, you’ll never see me not have music playing. My Spotify wrap for 2020 said that the total amount I listened to music was over 108,211 minutes. Additionally, whenever im reading any piece of information, I always say it out loud because I rely more on my hearing to make sure it makes sense. Thus, I’d score myself high for this intelligence.
- The capacity to recognize, perform, and appreciate music, rhythm, and all other aspects of musical patterns from different instruments and compositions (Ramdane, 2020).
- Intrapersonal
- The process of getting to know yourself by delving into self-reflection and analysis of one’s feelings, motivations, and goals and discerning them to realize the strengths, weaknesses, and desires one may have (Morgan, 1996).
- People high in this intelligence often learn better by working alone to sort their thoughts and ideas so that others do not intrude and disrupt them, and often choose careers as a psychologist, spiritual leader, and philosopher (OpenLearn, 2020).
- As someone who believes that you must understand yourself first before you can understand others, I feel like I have a good understanding of myself, especially my ambitions, strengths, and weaknesses. And although I like to work by myself, in my room away from distractions, I always seek feedback from my peers to ensure that anyone who isn't in my field of study can easily understand my work. Thus, I’d score myself at a medium for having some aspects of this intelligence.
- The process of getting to know yourself by delving into self-reflection and analysis of one’s feelings, motivations, and goals and discerning them to realize the strengths, weaknesses, and desires one may have (Morgan, 1996).
- Linguistic
- This intelligence is more focused on the auditory and speech modalities, which are essential to understand sounds, rhythms, meanings and functions of words, as well as written and spoken languages.
- As someone bilingual, I have always excelled in reading and writing for both Spanish and English and can communicate between both languages proficiently. However, despite being great at these things, my interest in these subjects has always been low. I don’t like reading and writing unless im being graded on it, but when I do write, I can check all grammatical errors instantly. I always go straight to writing and never write a rough draft. Additionally, all my friends always come to me if they need reviewing on their papers because of how quickly I can catch errors in writing. Thus, I’d score myself medium for this intelligence.
- People high in this intelligence often learn by listening to people speak, reading, writing, and discussing various topics that interest them, which are seen in careers such as poets, novelists, journalists, and public speakers (Armstrong, 2009).
- This intelligence is more focused on the auditory and speech modalities, which are essential to understand sounds, rhythms, meanings and functions of words, as well as written and spoken languages.
- Bodily Kinesthetic
- The self-awareness of the union between the mind and body to control body movements, manipulate objects skillfully, and perform a variety of physical activities (Armstrong, 2009).
- People high in this intelligence often learn by doing things with their hands. Some careers involved with this intelligence are athletes, dancers, surgeons, construction workers, etc. (Armstrong, 2009).
- As someone who has experience in different physical-related professions, I can say that this intelligence is by far the one I closely relate to. For instance, I am in the powerlifting team on campus, I work as a busser and runner for a catering job, and finally, I learn best by using my hands. Thus, I’d score myself high for this intelligence.
- The self-awareness of the union between the mind and body to control body movements, manipulate objects skillfully, and perform a variety of physical activities (Armstrong, 2009).
- Logical Mathematical
- The capacity to calculate, discern and analyze situations, numerical patterns, scientific research, and mathematical operations by relating and connecting thoughts and reasoning skills together to arrive at a logical answer (Armstrong, 2009).
- People high in this intelligence often learn better by doing tasks that involve logical reasoning, numbers, diagrams, puzzles, systematic or procedural ways, and by classifying or grouping information, which are characteristics seen in careers such as mathematicians, scientists, and detectives (OpenLearn, 2020).
- As someone who has always struggled with anything involving mathematical operations or numerical patterns, I have always been able to connect various thoughts, think logically, and come up with reasonable answers to different solutions. I have always loved strategy games that required futuristic thinking. However, if not the basics, then anything math or numerical related always caused me difficulties. Thus, I’d score myself medium for this intelligence.
- The capacity to calculate, discern and analyze situations, numerical patterns, scientific research, and mathematical operations by relating and connecting thoughts and reasoning skills together to arrive at a logical answer (Armstrong, 2009).
- Naturalist
- Ability to identify, classify, and discriminate among the living and non-living features that are encountered in the natural world, such as animals, plants, clouds, and rock configurations (Armstrong, 2009).
- People high in this intelligence tend to learn especially well by attending classes that are outside, learning information about animals and plants, being in areas with various greenery, and just about anything related to the living world, which tends to lead towards careers such as a farmer, chef, and hunter (Meyer, 1998).
- As someone who has always admired anything related to the outdoors, I have always found myself spending time outside in some form. For instance, my previous profession was landscaping, which involved knowing a variety of trees, flowers, and herbs that we planted. Additionally, I always find myself attempting to incorporate different vegetables, herbs, and spices into my cooking. I currently work in the catering industry, where im constantly being exposed to a new variety of cuisine combinations that I never knew before. Thus, I’d score myself high for this intelligence.
- Ability to identify, classify, and discriminate among the living and non-living features that are encountered in the natural world, such as animals, plants, clouds, and rock configurations (Armstrong, 2009).
Fluid & Crystalized Intelligence
- Fluid Intelligence is the ability to use our memory and information processing skills to think abstractly, reason quickly, and problem solve, which are skills essential in comprehension and learning (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
- Crystallized intelligence is the ability to utilize accumulated long-term knowledge from previous experiences acquired throughout one’s life, such as vocabulary and spelling, to solve problems and other aspects of our daily lives (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2019).
