Chapter 10
pressure and density
- P=F/A
- 1 Pa = 1 N/m2
- Patm= 1.01 x 10 e 5 pa
- density= M/V
- SI units: kg/ m3
- gases are COMPRESSIBLE, liquids are NOT COMPRESSIBLE
- U-tubes can be used to measure the density of a liquid and pressure differences
- P=F/A
Effects of gravity
- pressure always increases as one goes deeper into a fluid
Buoyancy and Archimede's Principles
- the minimum force required to lift a submerged object is apparent weight
Pascal's Principle
- can apply to liquids or gases
- the gas must be held in a closed container and be in static equilibrium
- a fluid that satisfies the four assumptions is called ideal fluid
- the fluid density is constant
- the flow is steady
- there is no friction--No Viscosity
- there are no complex flow patterns such as turbulence
Continuity and Bernoulli's Equation
- flow rate is area and speed
- SI units: m3/s
- kinetic and potential energy
- there are two different pressure terms (1) difference in air speed and (2) difference in height (bottom and top)
- flow rate is area and speed
