Improving CPU performance
Increasing cache size
- What is cache?
- Cache memory is fast and expensive memory mainly for the temporary storage of the frequently used data
- How does it help to improve performance?
- More data is stored closer to the CPU, making the access to the required data faster, therefore, increasing the CPU performance
- What is cache?
Increasing the number of cores
- What are these?
- Microprocessor, which carries out the fetch-decode-execute cycle, therefore, with the bigger number of cores, the CPU would be able to execute more of f-d-e cycles at the same time
- How does it improve the performance?
- More cores would be able to process the fetch-decode-execute cycle simultaneously, which makes the CPU more efficient
- What are these?
Pipelining
- What is it?
- Without pipelining, the CPU produces the fetch-decode-execute cycle one after another, whereas, with pipelining, it allows for the cycle to start even when the previous instruction wasn't done fully
- What is it?
Data Bus Length
- What is data bus?
- Set of wires which carries the set of data within the CPU
- How does it improve the performance?
- Increasing the size of the data bus, the CPU can carry more data, meaning that it would not have to make multiple different tries for 1 set of data
- What is data bus?
Address Bus Length
- What is it?
- Address Bus carries the address in the memory to the next instruction for the CPU to be fetched-decoded and processed.
- How does it improve the performance?
- It would be able to carry more data from the memory, making the CPU more efficient and faster
- What is it?
