1. Subfields of Semantics

   • Lexical Semantics
     • Focuses on the meaning of words and the relationships between them, such as synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, and homonymy.
   • Phrasal and Sentential Semantics
     • Deals with how meanings combine in phrases and sentences, exploring syntax-semantics interface.
   • Compositional Semantics:
     • Investigates how individual word meanings combine to form the meaning of larger expressions.
   • Pragmatics
     • Sometimes considered a subfield, it deals with how context influences the interpretation of meaning.

2. Important Concepts

   • Sense and Reference
     • Differentiates between the inherent meaning of a word (sense) and the actual object or concept it refers to in the real world (reference).
   • Connotation and Denotation
     • Denotation refers to the literal meaning of a word, while connotation encompasses the additional meanings and emotional associations it evokes.
   • Ambiguity
     • Lexical Ambiguity
     • Syntactic Ambiguity

3. Types of semantics

   • Truth-Conditional Semantics
     • Proposes that understanding the meaning of a sentence involves knowing the conditions under which it would be true.
   • Cognitive Semantics
     • Emphasizes the role of human cognition in the formation and understanding of meaning.
   • Frame Semantics
     • Focuses on understanding meaning in terms of conceptual structures (frames) that relate words to knowledge and experience.
   • Prototype Theory
     • Suggests that categories are formed based on typical examples (prototypes) rather than strict boundaries.
   • Model-Theoretic Semantics
     • Uses mathematical structures (models) to represent meanings and to analyze the relationships between expressions.
