Data Exchange
Simplex
- Simplex is easy to remember. It is data transmitted in one direction only. Think about your TV remote. You point it at your telly and click a button to get the TV to do something. Data is transmitted to your TV. This data is received by your TV which then carries out the request like turn the volume up or change the channel.
Half Duplex
- This is when devices can communicate with each other but only one at a time. For example a police radio. You click a button to speak and then have to release it to listen to the response.
Full Duplex
- Full duplex is like your telephone. You and your friends can speak to each other at the same time. The data channel allows 2 way communication.
VOIP
- Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service.
CODEC
- A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal. Codec is a portmanteau of coder-decoder or, less commonly, compressor-decompressor. A codec encodes a data stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption, or decodes it for playback or editing. Codecs are used in videoconferencing, streaming media and video editing applications. A video camera's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converts its analog signals into digital signals, which are then passed through a video compressor for digital transmission or storage. A receiving device then runs the signal through a video decompressor, then a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for analog display.
Parallel and Serial Transmission
- Serial data transmission transmits data 1 bit at a time. Slower than Parallel Data Transmission. b
- Parallel data transmission transmits data 8 bits at a time. Faster than Serial Data Transmission.
·
- These are scripts of code that runs on your machine but the information is submitted to a webserver which then does all the powerful processing. An example is the Google search. You open Google and search for Portland Ale. Your request is sent to Google's servers which then process it and look up the gigantic database of websites. Your little client computer doesn't have the disk space or the processing power to hold the database and look up your search.
ADVANTAGES
- Efficiency
- the server is much more powerful than your client so it can run extremely complex code very quickly.
- Browser independent
- as your request runs on a server it doesn't matter whether you are using Chrome, Explorer or Safari.
- Efficiency
