   • How is it being managed?
     • 1975, the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) was set up
       • Protect marine environment of the Mediterranean Sea
       • 1995, MAP included the whole coastal region and considered sustainable development
     • 'Sustainable future for the Mediterranean - The Blue Plan'
       • By 2020
         • 10% of all coastal and marine habitats protected
         • 'Green areas' in urban areas, reduce linear development
         • Inland tourism encouraged, increase possibility of sustainable development by coastline
         • Rules to reduce pollution from ships
         • Energy management to reduce need for coastal power stations
         • Waste water treated before put back into the sea
   • What are the problems and conflicts?
     • Habitats are being lost to urban sprawl
     • Waste water is being pumped into the sea polluting it
     • In winter months hotels have to let staff go
     • Development is not sustainable

   • Coastal Development
     • Tourism is a major economic asset in many medeterranean countries
       • Doubles population in summer months
     • Industry based on sea and sand type visitors
       • Intense pressure to develop coastal space
         • Demand will rise from 190million in 2005 to 300million in 2025
   • What is Happening? Why?
     • Development of the coast has put pressure on the physical environment
       • Environmental pressures are:
         • Growing population
         • Airports, hotels, urban sprawl lead to damage/disappearance of wetland ecosystem
         • Removal of marine sediment for construction of industry, damaged seabed habitats
         • Chemicals from agriculture, increased rate of sea pollution and eutrophication
           • Eutrophication - growth of algae as a result of fertiliser leaching from farmland
         • Untreated waste water being discharged into sea
