2. The three uses of expert systems: fixing machinery, online medical systems, telephoned based assistance, finance and government systems

3. The expert systems are designed to always give a reasonable response

4. An expert system is made up of three components: inference engine, knowledge base and user interface

   • The knowledge base is the part of the system that contains all the knowledge
   • The knowledge base is made of facts
   • The interface engine is designed uses a decisions tree to handle uncertainty
   • The user interface is generally more advanced and contains more menu based options

5. Advantages

   • Expert advice available 24/7
   • knowledge of expert staff can be captured to some extent
   • Can be used as a training aid
   • doesn't get tired
