2. How does it work?

   • •A user interface a non-expert user to question the expert system
   • •A knowledge base is facts and rule provided by human experts
   • •An inference engine is like a search engine and examines the knowledge for information that matches the query

3. Where are they used?

   • Medical diagnosis
   • Playing strategy games like chess against a computer
   • Providing financial advice
   • Helping to identify items
   • Helping to discover locations
   • Helping to diagnose car engine problems

   • Usually only covers a narrow range of knowledge
   • A lot of effort and cost has to go into making a good expert system
   • Not as good as having human experts to hand.
   • Does not learn from mistakes unless user feedback and human maintenance is part of its ongoing development
