CPU(Central processing Unit)
Purpose
- The CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program.
- The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the part of a computer system that is commonly referred to as the "brains" of a computer. The CPU is also known as the processor or microprocessor.
- The CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program.
The Fetch, Decode and Execute Cycle
- First the CPU fetches the inputed instructions. Then it decodes them so it can understand them. Finally it executes(carries out) the instructions.
Factors that affect performance
- The amount of RAM memory. The speed and generation of your CPU (the system clock). The size of the Register on your CPU. The Bus type and speed. The amount of Cache memory.
- The random access memory-most common type of memory used in computers, can be randomly accessed
- The amount of RAM memory. The speed and generation of your CPU (the system clock). The size of the Register on your CPU. The Bus type and speed. The amount of Cache memory.
A CPU can contain one or more processing units. Each unit is called a core. A core contains an ALU, control unit and registers. It is common for computers to have two (dual), four (quad) or even more cores. CPUs with multiple cores have more power to run multiple programs at the same time.
- The section of high speed memory within the CPU that stores data to be processed.
- The component of the CPU that manages instructions.
- Arithmetic logic unit - a component of the CPU that performs calculating functions such as addition and subtraction.
