Computer security
Firewall
- Controls which programs can send and receive data packets.
- Quarantines any programs or files that are harmful.
- Used when a program is trying to connect to another network.
- (A firewall is needed because it helps prevent people that can take over your computers and hack into your files. You should only trust certain websites and open email to people you know. Your computer needs to update regularly because new viruses can take over the computer.) moved from antivirus to firewall.
- A firewall is needed to control which data packets can be sent/received. It is important to have on your computer because some of the games that you want to go on can contain viruses that hack into your files. If you get sent an email with a link without https, you shouldnt trust it because it might be (untrusted).
- Firewalls are multilayered protectors and they are extremely hard to break into because they have lots of layers.
- Used to stop hackers from getting into your businesses and entering your bank.
- A firewall is a lot like its name. It prevents fire from getting into your house. Just like a computing firewall stops (malicious) software from entering your computer.
- The firewall stops malicious software from entering your computer whereas a anti-virus stops intruders from accessing your information.
Anti-virus
- scans your software periodically
- Protects computer from malicious software.
- Used to stop intruders from entering a computer.
- Prevents harmful data entering your computer.
- Needs updating regularly to make sure it knows the latest threats.
- Should be used on emails attachments and downloads.
Computer security is all about having a safe and secure use of your computer. Therefore you only go on protected websites and you update your anti-virus software often.
Encryption
- To encrypt a message you need a cipher which is also a method for code breaking.
- Many products need to be encripted, they have a key, for example: wifi codes and passwords.
- Encryption is very important. If you encrypt a password, you lock it. You can also (decrypt) a password but you would need a key. Encryption was a very important part of code breaking. They used encryption to make a code and to (decrypt) the code they used a key.
Malware
- Malware is a term refering to malicious software.
- Malicious software can take over files from computer.
- A trojan horse is a common malware and it misleads the user to hack into their computer. Some trogan horses can be emails sent to you that when opened take other your computer.
- A zombie is a computer that has a internet connection but has been hacked. A zombie takes over your computer when you have wifi and control it. It is like the trogan horse.
- A worm replicates itself to spreads to other computers. Although it works alone, it doesnt need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms usually always cause harm to your computer, SO WATCH OUT!
- A virus infects many computers, it can reproduce and cause lots of harm to your computer. It can shut down your computer.
Passwords
- Use a range of letters numbers and punctuation to make your password unique and hard to guess.
- NEVER give information to people about your passwords because they could get into your files. It is also important you dont give your email out to random people.
- Only use trusted websites for using your email. Therefore you shouldn`t buy with an email that you have given to other people.
Computer security
- When buying products check the website and the reveiws because it could be a scam and they could get into your bank details.
- On the internet people can lure you into doing (untrusted) games and websites.
- Be careful with websites without https://
- Only open trusted emails to ensure that it wont be a trick and someone is hacking you.
- If you are hacked, you could lose your reputation because they can access all of your details. If you are a business, you could lose profit.
- (Some websites dont need https because they might not hold any important data that needs to be sent. For example: the Hans Price website because it does not send or receive data whereas RM unify needs it because we send and receive data on it.)
- (Phishing is an attempt to secure important information/data. It works by clicking on an email and typing in your username and password. This results in loosing your details)
- (To prevent phishing you can make sure you only click on trusted emails.)
Other Malware: Rootkits, backdoors, evasion.
- Rootkits are software packages and if they hack your computer, they can control all of your information and where it goes.
- Backdoors are methods of breaking the rules of the computer. Once one backdoor is on your computer they can reproduce (make another door and so on)
- One of the most common evasion technique is by fingerprint.
- If you have an iPhone, your phone is unlocked by a fingerprint. This can be a threat to you and an easy way for a hacker to access everything on your phone.
Improved work in brackets.
Phising is a good way for someone to get into your details. It can be easily done through emails and links. Make sure you check the link is genuine before you click on it because it might be someone trying to hack into your information.
