Multi - Store Model

1. This model of memory was proposed by Atkinson and Shriffin (1968) as a linear model that shows how information flows through th processes of memory.

2. There are three main components - sensory, short term and long term memory - to the model and it is assumed that information must pass through each of these fixed stages to be remembered.

3. There are capacity and duration limitations and encoding differentations at each stage

   • Sensory memory
     • Sense specific encoding
     • Few hundered milli-seconds duration
   • Short term memory
     • Duration of 0-18 seconds
     • Capacity of 7+/-2 items
     • Mainly acoustic encoding
   • Long term memory
     • Unlimited duration and capacity
     • Mainly semantic (but can be visual and acoustic) encoding
