Raised ethical issues, pps were put under stress and confusion of the study to avoid demand characteristics however deception raises issues

24 male psychology students from Stanford Uni
Applied and were allocated role of guard or prisoner
Prisoners were arrested, stripped and allocated numbers for names.
Lived 3 in a cell.
Guards had khaki uniforms, nightsticks and mirrored sunglasses
worked 8 hour shifts and then went home
"Correctional Officers"
Given no direct instructions, just "keep control"
Meant to last 14 days but only lasted 6
due to ambiguous situation one guard took the lead and treated prisoners harshly, others followed example set.
Guards shown genuine sadistic tendancies, they internalised their roles.
Prisoners became passive, depressed.
Showed conformity to social rules
Prisoners rebelled and were punished by guards

Controlled observation, no extraneous variables, standardised, reliable results
Validity
Low population validity, only young males, students, andocentric bias, cannot be generalised.
Sample
Low ecological validity, artificial setting, no crimes commited, only male, small number, not generalisable.
Ethics
Raised ethical issues, extremely brutality of the guards, prisoners suffered depression and psychological damage, pps should be protected from harm.
