Operating System
Multitasking
- Modern CPU's work much faster than RAM and other components which means that they can cope with more than one process at a time
- If a program is running slow, rather than letting the CPU run idle it will turn its attention to another process.
- Several programs can be ran at once with multitasking.
The User Interface
- Provides a means of communication between the user and the operating system
- The kernel can provide a range of user interface
- The user interface layer is above the kernel
Drivers
- Drivers allow a peripheral device to be connected to a computer
Peripherals Management
- A peripheral is a piece of hardware that is not directly connected to the CPU – such as a keyboard, a mouse or even a hard disk drive
- The Operating System manages all of the peripheral devices that are connected to the computer – this allows them to be disabled, or drivers be updated.
File Management
- The operating system must be able to identify where files are stored for long term storage e.g. the hard disk drive or a solid state drive
Operating Systems manage the way in which hardware interacts with software
