Sound waves

  1. Sound is a longitudinal wave

  2. The direction of the oscillation is parallel to the direction in which the wave is travelling

  3. Compression - an area where the particles are squashed together (high pressure)

  4. Rarefaction - An area where the particles are spread out (low pressure)

  5. Bell jar experiment

    • The bell jar experiment told us that sound can't travel when there are no particles the sound can't travel through
  6. All sounds are produced by objects that are vibrating

    • These sounds travel outwards from the source as waves
  7. Sound waves travel from vibrating objects to our ears by means of sound waves,

  8. Lots of rarefaction's and compression's make up a sound wave

  9. The sound waves journey

    • The sound waves are directed into the ear canal by the outer ear
      • When the sound waves hit our ear drum our ear drum vitrate
        • The ear drum is connected to three tiny boned called the hammer, the anvil and the stirrup, as the eardrum vibrates these three bones have levers and amplify the vibrations so that the ear can work better
          • These vibrations then pass through a liquid inside a long coiled structure called cochlea
            • Impulses are sent from the hairs to the brain through the auditory nerve, the brain then hears the sound
  10. Sound can travel through solids, liquids and gases this is because there are particles for the sound waves to vibrate against

    • Sound can't travel a vacuum because there no particles for the sound waves to vibrate against
  11. We can't see sound waves but we can use a scullloscope, we can produce a picture on screen to represent the sound waves produced by a particular souurce
