BADDELEY 1966
AIM
- To see if STM is largely based on acoustic code.
- To find out whether LTM is also accoustically encoded.
- To find out if STM and LTM is sematically encoded.
PROCEDURES
- Particepents were given 4 sets of words to recall.
- 1. Acoustically similar (e.g. can, cap, mat.)
- 2. Acoustically dissimilar (e.g. pit, cow, pen)
- 3. Sematically similar (e.g. big, huge, large)
- 4. Sematically dissimilar (e.g. good, hot, safe)
- One group was asked to reall words immediatly. (STM).
- The other group were asked to recall words after a delay of 20 minuets. (LTM).
- Particepents were given 4 sets of words to recall.
FINDINGS
- The immediate recall group (STM)
- These particepants remembered fewer acoustically similar than acoustically dissimilar.
- The delayed recall group (LTM)
- These particepants showed no significant difference when remembering acousticaly encoded words, but there was differences in sematically encoded words.
- The immediate recall group (STM)
CONCLUSION
- STM = Acoustic Encoding
- LTM = Sematic Encoding
