BIOS and UEFI
Similarities and differences between BIOS and UEFI
- BIOS
- CMOS
- The CMOS power supply is a CR2032 battery
- re-seat the battery to reset any saved changes to the BIOS
- Remembers configuration settings for the BIOS
- 16 GBs of DDR4, 2 TB hard drive, 3.1 GHz CPU speed
- No GUI
- must run in 16-bit processor mode
- CMOS
- UEFI
- GUI
- CMOS storage method has been replaced with flash memory (also referred to as EEPROM)
- a tiny operating system that runs on top of the PC’s firmware, and it can do a lot more than a BIOS.
- runs in 32-bit or 64-bit mode
- BIOS and UEFI
- Responsible for finding hardware on your computer.
- Take pictures of the settings before you make changes to the settings
- Configure what starts up first with Boot Priority
- If you're booting an OS from a DVD/Flash drive make those #1
- The hard drive that contains the OS must be #1
- Firmware that you can access to make changes to the system.
- Access with ESC, DEL, F1, F2, F10
- Flash me if you can't find latest versions of RAM and CPU
- Save and exit with F10
- BIOS
Flash BIOS/UEFI
- PC will be able to see the latest versions of RAM and CPUs
- Manufacture'rs website will have the update
- Unzip the files you download from the manufacturer's website and copy that .CAP file onto a flash drive
- Connect the flash drive into a USB 3.0 port on the back of your PC
- DO NOT start a flash during a thunder storm.
- interrupting the flashing process can cause serious damage to your PC
- How do you run the update once you have it installed?
- BIOS\UEFI Advanced mode > tool > Flash utility > flash drive > click on motherboard's name folder > click the .CAP file
Configure BIOS/UEFI settings
- Clocking
- Path to change speed is Advanced settings > Ai Tweaker > Ai Overclock tuner > manual > Base clock frequency
- over clocking voids your warranty
- Lowering speed will reduce a computer's power consumption, increase battery life, and reduce heat emission.
- Path to change speed is Advanced settings > Ai Tweaker > Ai Overclock tuner > manual > Base clock frequency
- Set a password
- Advanced settings > Main screen > Security > Administrator password
- Adjust Fan speeds
- Qfan control -or- Advanced mode > Monitor
- Adjust time
- Click on military time
- Clocking
BIOS/UEFI Tools
- Secure Boot
- Secure automatically loads windows UEFI, this prevents malware and or "unauthorized" operating systems from loading during the system start up process
- Disable secure boot to use Linux OS
- Secure automatically loads windows UEFI, this prevents malware and or "unauthorized" operating systems from loading during the system start up process
- TPM \ Key management
- encrypts everything on the hard drive from the motherboard.
- Secure Boot
