Central executive
- controll centre
- data from the senses
- Decides how attention is directed
- Coordinates actions of other components
- Can process information from any sensory modality (semantic, auditory, visual)
Visuospatial Sketchpad
- Limited capacity
- Can rehearse information
- Temporary memory system for holding visual and spatial information
- manipulates information from the eyes or the LTM
Phonological loop
- limited capacity
- used to rehearse info
- auditory information and preserves word order
- baddeley(1968) subdivided it into phonological store and articulatory store
Episodic Buffer
- combines information from other areas
- Extra storage system
- limited capacity
- baddeley(2000) added this once he realised that the model needed a more general store.
- CE has no storage capacity
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
- believed that the msm was over simplified
- believed the stm was not a unitary store but was made up of several
- They saw LTM as a more passive store that holds previously learned material for use by the Stm when needed
supporting studies
- Bunge et al (2000) central executive
- Baddeley and Hitch(1976) visuospatial sketchpad
- shallice and warrington(1970) episodic buffer
- Baddeley et al(1975) phonological loop
- hitch and baddeley(1976) central executive
