Language Development

  1. The Nativist Perspective

    • Noam Chomsky, 1957 Believed language was too complex for child. Introduced the LAD (Language Acquisition Device)
      • The LAD assists to create sentences with developed vocabulary that child hears and learns. Learned swiftly.
    • Language of the brain
      • The language is housed in the left hemisphere of the cerebral cortex. The Broca's area, located in the left hemisphere, assists grammatical processing and language production. While Wernicke's area located in the left temporal lobe plays a part in comprehending word meaning.
        • Impaired pronunciation and grammer triggered by brain damage.
        • At birth, brain is not fully laternalized, language areas develop as children acquire language. If injured in first few years, other regions take over language competence. Localization isn't necessary.
      • Complicated relationship between language functions and brain structures.
    • Sensitive Period for language development
      • language development has unique biological properties.
        • The language competence of deaf adults could not grasp the language at a later stage. The right hemisphere localization of ASL function, which require spatial visual processing of hand, arm and facial movements is greatly reduced at later stage
        • The more committed the brain is to native language patterns, the better mastery can be accomplished to acquire language.
    • The limitations, challenged on various grounds. 1) absence of complete description of abstract grammatical structures. The link to children managing rules with such diversity is unclear.
      • Assumption of grammatical knowledge is innately determined does not fit with certain observations of language development.
      • 1. lacks comprehensiveness. 2. Don't explain connected discourse and sustain meaningful conversations. 3. No pragmatic side of language and grants little attention to the quality of language input. 4. Don't regard childrens cognitive capacities as important.
  2. The Interactionist perspective

    • Inner capacities and environmental influences. There are 2 types. 1) Theory applies the information process to language development. 2) Emphasizes social interaction.
      • The information- processing theory derived from research with connectionist or artifial neural network models.
        • With the connectionist model, researchers create computer systems to,1) simulate multilayered networks of neural connections in brain and programmed with basic learning procedures
        • Artifical network gives the accuracy of its responses. When 1 response is correct, that connection is strengthened . When incorrect, it weakens.
          • With experience linguistic patterns are modified and combines rules that are derived from memory.
            • These statistical computations not sufficient for mastery of higher level aspects of language. (grammatical structures between relationships amongst words and phrases.)
              • Discriminating words in fluent speech through infants ability to hear sound and detect words.
                • Brain contains language and governs similiar perceptual, motor and cognitive abilities.
                  • Wernicke's area associated with comprehension of non- verbal than verbal sound. i.e, patterned stimuli, such as music, moving of light that depicts shapes.
                  • Children's social skills and language experiences are involved in language development.
      • The social interactionist theory is a native capacity, a strong desire to understand others and be understood. A rich environment to assist children in discovery of functions and regularities of language.
        • Assists child to provide appropriate language to help relate content and structure of language to its social meanings.
      • 1) Disagreement continues over children making sense of complex language environments by applying cognitive capacities or these are turned to language. 2) It affected by social competencies. 3) In native endowment, cognitive processing strategies and social experiences may operate in different balances with each component of language.
        • We know so much about the course of language development than precisely how it takes place.
  3. In conclusion, through the interactionist theory we come to know that social influence is critical, some interactions apply this information processing to language development. The child and parent conversations creates a zone of proximal development in which helps the child's language to broaden. Impatience with this can lead them to stop talking and result in immature language skills. The nativist theory regards children as naturally endowed with language acquisition device proving a complex language system is unique to humans listing the important areas in the brain that is associated for language development.
