Computer Performance
Cores
- The number of independent processors in the CPU which run the Fetch Decode Execute cycles simultaneously. Dual core-2 indepenent processors. Quad core-4 independent processors.
- A CPU is traditionally made up of a processor with a single core. Most modern CPUs have two, four or even more. The disadvantage abot a quad processor is that they are more expensive, hard to design and to make. The also use up more power than single or dual processors.
Cache
- Cache is a small amount of memory which is part of the CPU, closer to the CPU than the RAM. It is used to temporarily hold instructions and data that CPU is likely to reuse.
- The more cache there is, the more data can be stored closer to the CPU. Transfers from and to cache take less time than transfers to and from RAM.
Clock Speed
- Clock speed is measured in Hertz.(Hz).1 Hz- 1 cycle per sec.1 KHz- 1000 cycles per sec.1 MHz-1,000,000 cycles per sec. .1 GHz- 1,000,000,000 cycles per sec.
- The speed at which the CPU can carry out instructions is called clock speed. It is the amount of times it can perform the Fetch Decode Execute cycles.
RAM
- RAM is also a high-speed storage medium as it can be accessed quickly .The more RAM there is, the more memory there is.
- RAM stands for Random Access Memory.RAM is volatile as it will lose all the data once the computer is switched off..It stores programs, parts of the operating systems and the files currently being used.
