Computer Performance
Cache
- Cache memory is a chip-based computer component
- In order to be closer to the processor cache memory needs to be much smaller than main memory which means it has less storage space
- Cache memory is a temporary storage area that the computers processor can retrieve data from easily
- If you had more cache there would be more room for instructions
Cores
- Independent processors run the fetch decode execute cycle simultanously
- The number of independent processors on the CPU
- Dual core: 2 independent processors Quad core: 4 independent processors
RAM
- Stores the programs, parts of the operating system and files currently being used
- Is volatile - deletes when device is turned off
- Short for Random Access Memory
Clock Speed
- Clock speed is measured in hertz (Hz)
- 1KHz = 1000 cycles per second
- The number of fetch decode execute cycles a CPU can perform per second
