Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

1. IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment

2. An IDE is a piece of software that provides features to help a programmer to develop their program

3. Most IED's will have the following features:

   • Run time environment
     • Allows the code to be run quickly within the IDE - this is done using a start or run button.
   • Translator
     • Compiler
       • Compilers translate all of the source code at the same time and create one executable file
     • Interpreter
       • Interpreters translate and run the source code one instruction at a time, but doesn't create an executable file
   • Error diagnostics
     • Hep to find and fix errors in a program - they'll tell you the location of the error and often suggest ways to fix it
   • Code editor
     • Main part of an IDE, it's where the code is written
