  1. Perfect modals

    • USAGE
      • We form perfect modals with have and the past participle. We always use the following formula to make a statement with perfect modals: To ask a question, we reverse the subject and the ordinary modal.
    • FORM
      • ubject + ordinary modal + have + past participle
    • EXAMPLE
      • He couldn’t have driven himself to work today.
      • If I had guessed the future, I would have taken some precautions against what would happen.
      • My mother has arrived late. She must have been in a traffic jam.
  2. Third conditional

    • USAGE
      • The third conditional is used to express the past consequence of an unrealistic action or situation in the past. It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result of this situation.
    • FORM
      • If + past perfect, would/wouldn't have + past participle.
    • EXAMPLE
      • If you had told me about the meeting, I would have come.
      • If you had told me about the meeting, I wouldn’t have missed it.
      • I wouldn’t have missed the meeting if you’d told me about it.
  3. Mixed conditional

    • It is possible for the two parts of a conditional sentence to refer to different times, and the resulting sentence is a "mixed conditional" sentence. There are two types of mixed conditional sentence.
      • FORM
        • In this type of mixed conditional sentence, the tense in the 'if' clause is the past perfect, and the tense in the main clause is the present conditional.
          • If clause (condition)
            • present conditional
              • If this thing had happened
          • Main clause (result)
            • If + past perfect
              • that thing would happen.
      • USAGE
        • As in all conditional sentences, the order of the clauses is not fixed. You may have to rearrange the pronouns and adjust punctuation when you change the order of the clauses, but the meaning is identical
      • EXAMPLES
        • • We wouldn't be lost if we had looked at the map
        • • If you had caught that plane you would be dead now
        • • You would be dead now if you had caught that plane
