AICLE/CLIL Content and Language Integrated Learning

  1. AICLE Integrated Learning of Contents and Foreign Languages. cf. Bilingual education

    • "AICLE refers to the situations in which the subjects or part of the subjects are taught through a foreign language with a dual objective, learning content and simultaneous learning of a foreign language." (Marsh, 1994).
    • Importance of AICLE
      • The language of this system is the center of the learning process.
      • The language is learned through the use of real situations, which the student will be able to repeat tomorrow.
      • Actively apply the language in the study in order to get used to speaking this other language.
      • They develop basic interpersonal communication skills and their competence in cognitive - academic language.
    • Advantages of AICLE
      • Promotes a deeper level of assimilation, students are exposed to similar language and thus produce and remember information from their second language.
      • CLIL classes add an additional dimension to the class and engage students by motivating them with learning a language.
      • Many teachers see CLIL as a more natural way to learn a language, when a subject is taught in that language there is a concrete reason to learn both at the same time.
      • Encourages students to develop 21st century skills, including the ability to think critically, be creative, communicate, and collaborate.
  2. CLIL Integrated learning of content and foreign language

    • 'CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focussed aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language'. (Marsh, 1994)
    • Teacher role
      • It is practiced with controlled, semi-controlled or free activities.
      • Creativity has no limits since students are given the necessary tools at a linguistic level to express their imagination.
    • Student role
      • They learn to have a critical sense.
      • Collaboration, cooperative work, and social skills are monitored and evaluated.
      • Develop negotiation skills through empathic behavior.
    • Benefits of using CLIL in the classroom
      • Provides opportunities to develop a high degree of proficiency or ability in the language.
      • Help create new content.
      • It encourages collaboration and knowledge of culture.
  3. Basic principles of AICLE / CLIL practice in the classroom

    • The language is used to learn content in the area but you also have to learn the language in order to understand and communicate.
      • The use of the language is significant
      • The CLIL teacher needs the subject objectives and the required language
      • Dalton-Puffer calls language curriculum.
    • Fluency is more important than grammatical and linguistic accuracy in general.
      • Take advantage of opportunities that arise to pay attention to language form
      • Is to work the linguistic form is the concept of "scaffolding"
    • The subject that is studied is what determines the type of language that needs to be learned.
      • Specific vocabulary such as structures or types of speech (describe, relate, etc.)
      • Practical language skills (hearing, listening, speaking, writing, or interacting)
  4. Curriculum 4Cs (Coyle 1999)

    • A well thought out CLIL lesson should combine the following elements
      • Content: Allowing progress in knowledge, skills and understanding of the specific topics of a given curriculum
      • Communication: Using the language to learn while learning to use the language itself.
      • Cognition: Developing cognitive skills that link the formation of concepts (abstract and concrete), knowledge and language.
      • Culture: Allowing exposure to varied perspectives and shared knowledge that make us more aware of the other and of ourselves.
