RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 6.1.1
Identify the resources
- PRIMARY MEMORY = all processed data and instructions have to be stored in the primary memory
- connected directly to the CPU, fetch decode, execute cycle
- SECONDARY STORAGE = ROM, HARD DISK, USB STICKS, DVD
- hardware that provide data integrity, low cost, mass storage capacity and permanent storage
- RAM = type of primary memory, all data and instructions can be altered at any time
- SRAM = statics RAM
- faster, more expensive, smaller quantities
- DRAM = dynamic RAM
- larger quantities, cheaper, slower
- volatile - when power is turned off data is lost
- RAM = random access memory
- SRAM = statics RAM
- ROM = read only memory
- non volatile, slower
- holds critical instructions
- common use = hold the Basin Input Output System (BIOS)
- PROCESSRO SPEED = fetch, decode, execute cycle continuously as long as the computer is on
- measured in MIPS (minion instructions per second)
- clock rate = frequency of processor is running, indicator of processor's performance
- BANDWITH = rate at which data can travel from SRAM to DRAM to the processor and vice versa
- screen resolution = all devices (televisions, phones, computers) have a maximum number of distinct pixels
- sound processor = sound cards facilitate the input, process and output of audio signals
- PRIMARY MEMORY = all processed data and instructions have to be stored in the primary memory
RESOURCES: primary memory, secondary storage, processor cores, speed of each core bandwidth, screen resolution, disk storage, sound processor, graphics processor, cache network connectivity
SYSTEM RESOURCES = components within a computer, both physical and virtual, that are available to be used by the operating system and other applications.
disk storage = generally category of metal or plastic storage plate on which data can be recorded
- HDD (hard disk drive), FDD ( floppy disk drive), SSD (solid state drives) SSHD (solid state hybrid drives)
graphics processor - general purpose processors are not efficient at running demanding computer generated imagery algorithms
Network connectivity = process of connecting various parts of a network to one another
