Market & Technology Dynamics

1. Definition of Innovation

   • Idea + Commercialisation £££
     • Competitive Advantage
   • "Business only has 2 functions - Marketing & Innovation" - DRUCKER

2. History of Innovation

   • Creative Destruction/ Schumpeter's Gale
     • Capitalist Engine
       • New Markets
       • New Methods of Production
       • New Consumer Goods
       • New Industrial Organisations
       • New Transportation

3. Dynamics

   • Technology Life Cycle (TLC)
   • Technology Adoption Cycle (TAC)
     • Chasm

4. Innovator's Dilemma

   • Disruptive technologies vs. Rational investments
   • Sustaining vs. Disruptive technologies
   • Trajectories of market needs vs. Tech improvement

5. Exponential Technologies

   • Kondratieff's Waves
   • Networks & Computing
   • AI
   • Robotics
   • 3D Printing
   • Biotech
   • Nano

6. Disruptive Innovation

   • A new product or service that enters at the low end of the market and gradually moves up-market, displacing existing, established products. The change driving this disruption may, in itself, be a minor or incremental technological innovation.
   • Discontinuous Innovation
     • New technology applied to solve an existing need in a new way. The HP Inkjet printer is the classic example here, having displaced earlier impact printhead technologies with a new and better way to put ink on paper.
     • Customer-centric
       • Change in user behaviour
       • Convenient
       • Affordable
   • New Markets
     • Changes value proposition
